Beyond the Needle

Navigating GLP-1 Medications in a Changing Landscape

Beyond the Needle

You were handed a prescription. Maybe a pen. Possibly a leaflet.

But nobody sat down with you and told you what this medication would actually feel like. Nobody told you about the silence that arrives when food noise stops for the first time in your life. Nobody mentioned the muscle loss, the anesthesia interaction risk, the labs your GP isn’t routinely checking, or what happens biologically when the medication stops and the noise comes back.

That gap — between what the clinical literature describes and what people actually live — is why this book exists.

What Beyond the Needle covers:

  • The science — how GLP-1 medications actually work at a hormonal and neurological level, why they succeed where decades of dieting failed, and what the clinical trial data really shows versus what the headlines reported
  • The side effects — every one of them, explained honestly. The nausea, the muscle loss, the sulfur burps nobody warns you about, the anesthesia interaction most prescribers never mention, and the mood changes some patients experience and do not know how to name
  • The nutrition reality — why protein is non-negotiable, what the research shows about how little most GLP-1 patients are actually eating, and what to do about it practically
  • The stopping question — what happens biologically when the medication stops, why weight regain is near-universal without preparation, and how to give yourself the best possible chance of holding what you built
  • The bigger picture — the oral medications, what is coming next, the equity and access reality, and what the twenty-year data gap means for the decisions you are making right now
  • The human story — because this was not written from the outside

Who this book is for:

  • Anyone who has started a GLP-1 medication and wants the full picture
  • Anyone thinking about starting and wants to be properly prepared
  • Anyone who has stopped and is trying to make sense of what happened
  • Healthcare professionals who want honest clinical context beyond the prescribing guidelines
  • Anyone walking alongside someone on this journey

About the Author

I am Patience — P.C. Ennis. Registered Nurse (AHPRA & NMC) with 32 years of clinical practice across Australia and the United Kingdom. Bariatric surgery patient. GLP-1 patient. Founder of Body Compass.

I wrote Beyond the Needle because I could not find the book I needed when I started my own medication. I had read the trials. I understood the mechanisms. I believed I was prepared.

I was not prepared for the gap between the information and the experience.

This book closes that gap. Not with reassurance. With honest, evidence-based clinical information written by someone who has sat on both sides of the consultation room — and who is navigating this alongside you.

Walking with you all the way. 🌿
